Recipe Deadline Extension, a call for volunteers + a happy dance!

Holy tomatoes you guys – we just looked at the paypal account and had an AOOOOGA moment, because the current total is….

$9,243.17 – we’re over 40% there!
That’s almost $1,000 for the AARDA, yo!

We’ve got just under a month to go, and the recipes are still rolling in. Due to popular demand (and how freaking lucky are we that there even *is* popular demand?!?) we’re extending the recipe submission deadline to May 11th, which is 2 weeks before my surgery. So, if you’ve got something to contribute, click here for the submission details. We can’t wait to see what you’re cooking up!

I went to a fancy wedding industry tea party event yesterday, and so many ladies there shared how much they’re loving the FUNdraiser, and told me about recipes they’re already planning to try. It was incredible to feel their support and hear how our little project is not just benefiting us, but other people too. Because, as we all know, the quickest way to the heart is through the belly, right?! PS – don’t you love my floral hair pimpage from the party?

I’m getting the recipes input as fast as I can, but we could always use more help, so we’re open to volunteers. And soon, we’ll be ready to start compiling them into a sexy format for the paperback and hardcopy editions, so if you’ve got graphic design/layout skills to donate, we’d love to have you! Just email me at dana @ dishingfordana dot com to get involved! We’ll credit you hard and love you long time for your help!

Whew. I feel like I keep saying this over and over, but this is just the most amazing thing ever. I cannot believe its all truly happening. My heart has never been so swollen with gratitude and wonder. I wish I could get a skywriter to tell the world how much appreciation is inside me, but that wouldn’t even be enough. My happiness so intense, every time I sneeze, a rainbow comes out :)

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!!

Quincy Jones’ Thriller Ribs | Silver Charm Events

Liz is one of my best friends in the wedding business. She’s also one of the hardest-working women I know. Having her involved in my website and my life is a tremendous gift, so I’m thrilled to pay that forward by sharing her favorite recipe with you today… it sounds pretty dang amazing to me, and I don’t even eat meat! It also happens Oprah’s favorite rib recipe… and if Oprah likes it, it has to be good. Right?

Clara’s Spectacular Buttermilk Corn Pancakes
From the kitchen of Cat & Adi Benner – Next Exit Photography

“What Clara? You would like corn pancakes for breakfast again? Hmmmmm. Okay. And who makes the best corn pancakes in the whole world?”

“Daddy!”

Parsley Butter Soup | Ginger Won’t Snap

I LOVE SOUP. I could eat it every day. I could sing it to the mountains. I get that from my dad. Soup is arguably one of his favorite food groups, and its totally one of mine too.

This soup sounds amazingly decadent for something so relatively healthful, and I love that it can easily be adapted to be vegan with the substitution of Earth Balance, veggie broth and optional Daiya vegan cheese shreds.

Parsley Butter Soup
From the kitchen of Ginger – Ginger Won’t Snap

♥ This is my ultimate comfort food because it’s warm and comforting. It feels like you’re pigging out when you eat it, but it’s actually quite good for you!

♥ This is a family recipe from my aunt.

♥ Eating this dish feels like a hug in my mouth!

♥ This dish is best served when you feel anything! It’s great all the time, especially when you’re cold :)

♥ When I can’t cook, I get my comfort food fix by ordering in Swiss Chalet chicken.

♥ My cousin goes nuts over this soup, it is her favourite dish and so every time there is a family gathering at my aunt & uncle’s they make the soup. Now that I know how to make it too, she asks me to make some every time she comes over! I guess we’ll have to teach her how to cook soon…

One month out.

One month from today, I’ll be in my 12th surgery. Time is moving way too fast.

The outpouring of love and support from you readers, and the wedding community, has been absolutely incredible, and I’m thrilled to announce that the current Dishing for Dana FUNdraising total is….

$8,320.96

– that’s nearly 40% of our goal! That’s also $832.00 going to the AARDA to help the greater good as well. I can’t believe how far we’ve come in just the past 3 weeks, thanks to you. My awe is only exceeded by my gratitude.

And it just keeps getting better. This morning I applied for a debit card through our paypal account, so that we start paying off some of the worst of our debt from previous surgeries. The idea that I will no longer be hounded by creditors or collections-people is absolutely thrilling and makes my soul sing, especially going into another expensive operation. I can’t wait to karate-chop those bills and send those creditors packin’. Heeee-ya! (that’s my bad-ass karate noise)

We’re adding new recipes to the database all the time, and will be debuting some dishes from some very special friends in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to Dishing for Dana for those big reveals. There’s mucho deliciousness to be had and food porn to enjoy. C’mon, you know you wanna peek :)

If you haven’t donated yet, I encourage you to check out our special perks and incentives available to donors, because there’s some shamazing deals in there, including discounts on bridal accessories and wedding photography! Stay tuned also for our Dishing for Dana auction, which is the ultimate win-win… you’ll get a chance to save lots of money on some very valuable items, and all the proceeds will benefit our drive and the AARDA! The online auction will be part of our final push as I go into surgery, the week of May 25th.

And if you don’t have a dime to spare, I understand. I really do. (You know I do.) But it doesn’t cost a thing to share our story, or a link to the Dishing for Dana page with your community via your blog, twitter, facebook, skywriter, loudspeaker, or tattoo on your arm (ok, maybe not that extreme… but it would be pretty bad-ass). Keeping up the momentum will be the key to our success over the coming month, and would love your help!

Thanks again to the following blogs for spreading the Dishing for Dana word far and wide. If I’ve missed you, hit me up in the comments and I’ll add your link!

Meg’s Favorite Stew, With Lots of Red Wine, As Cooked By Her Husband | A Practical Wedding

When I first started blogging as an engaged bride, I fell completely, head over heels in love with Meg at A Practical Wedding. She and I got married around the same time, and share a similar “go your own way” and “celebrate YOU” sensibility regarding the whole wedding planning experience. Her honest writing, down to earth warmth, and passion for keeping the process sane, practical and personal really spoke to me and inspired me and my tender newbie blogger heart.

Fast forward to 2 years later… Meg is still a major inspiration to me as a writer and as a human, but I’m also lucky enough to now call her friend. If you haven’t checked out her site yet, hie ye hither. (And check out her sweet Dishing for Dana post!) But come back after, so you can enjoy this insanely cozy beef stew recipe from her and David’s kitchen.

Meg’s Favorite Stew, With Lots of Red Wine, As Cooked By Her Husband
From the kitchen of Meg’s Husband David – A Practical Wedding

lamb stew

♥ This is my ultimate comfort food because one of the first phrases I learned to say was, “More sauce, Daddy, more sauce.” And stew, well, it has a whole lot of sauce. When I was growing up, my dad was the family cook. And because I married well, my husband is now the family cook. So I can’t say this recipe is mine, but I can say that I nudged my vegetarian husband to create it. Also, he’s a very good cook, so you’re welcome.

♥ I discovered this recipe when I told my husband that we’d been married for six years, and he still hadn’t learned to make my favorite food, and then I looked really sad, and then I looked even sadder, and then I yelled, “I WANT STEW.”

♥ Eating this dish feels like an exercise in deliciousness and warmth. And also booze. Also, sometimes you say, “Mmmmmmmmmm. Mmmmmmm.” while you eat it. But I’m not sure if that’s a feeling.

♥ This dish is best served when you feel A) Like you need meat. B) Like you need the best food ever. C) Like you need your insides to be warm

♥ When I can’t cook, I get my comfort food fix by…Well, I can’t cook. So I get my comfort food fix by asking my husband to cook.

♥ This recipe is from David Mishook. That’s my husband. He thought it was pretty important that he got credit for this, not me.

Vegan Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes | QuarryGirl

If you’re a vegan (or vegan-curious) in Southern California, then you’re probably well-aware of the legendary QuarryGirl blog – aka the ultimate vegan dining resource guide for our part of the world. If you live in other parts of the world, you should still check her out, because her vegan field reports for areas outside of SoCal are pretty damn awesome too, and she regularly features new vegan grocery products available nationwide. She even featured my review of Chicago Diner awhile back. Mmmm, gyros. Wait, what was I saying?

Right. Since I consider QG to be one of the ultimate experts on vegan cuisine, having her share a recipe with Dishing for Dana is especially exciting. And these pimping potatoes promise to deliver on some serious tastebud teasing action. I might just have to try this one out tonight!

Vegan Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

vegan scalloped potatoes♥ this dish is the best comfort food on earth because it’s creamy, indulgent, and loaded with carbs! it’s what dreams are made of.

♥ i discovered this recipe when my mom used to make cheesy scalloped potatoes all the time when i was a kid, and they were my favorite dish on the planet. i tried veganizing her recipe a couple years ago, and the result was unbelievable.

♥ eating this dish feels like childhood! for me it feels like childhood, the days before i was vegan.

♥ this dish is best served when you feel this dish is perfect for when you really want to cut loose and eat something crazy. if you’re sad, it will make you happy…and if you’re happy, it will make you ecstatic!

Bacon Asparagus Linguine | The Man Registry

This recipe just has BAD-ASS written all over it. How much do I love that our first male-submitted recipe is all about the bacon and carbs? So classic. Tony Soprano would approve, I’m sure. I’m not really sure what else to say about it because I’m hypnotized by its pasta-stic masculine prowess.

Oh yeah, Chris describes it like hot sex and winning the lottery. That’s definitely worth noting :)

Bacon Asparagus Linguine
from the kitchen of Chris Easter – The Man Registry

abc

♥ I discovered this recipe when my wife actually came across it while reading I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti, by Giulia Melucci.

♥ Eating this dish feels like a combination of great sex and the feeling you get after winning millions in the lottery. Just try it, you’ll see what I’m talking about.

♥ This dish is best served when you feel exhausted after a stressful day at work. It’s the type of dish that just thinking about it, gets you through the day.

♥ When I can’t cook, I get my comfort food fix by ordering in one of my guilty pleasures (pizza, wings, Chinese) or hitting up a favorite food stand or truck.
